In short
- Ottawa high-rise condos often have concrete walls, and installers book elevators and supply insurance certificates when the building asks.
- In a condo declaration the concrete slab is usually a common element, while drywall and finishes may belong to the unit.
- Holding strength in brick depends on the brick itself and on the mortar, so the installer looks at the wall before choosing anchors.
- Masonry tends to add time at the same rate: TaskRabbit Ottawa says drilling into a facade may need more hours.
- One Ottawa installer's flat rates, $89.50 and $119.50 by screen size, carry no extra line for concrete.

Which wall is it
Ottawa has three common cases. A downtown or Westboro high-rise condo with poured concrete walls. A house or townhouse with a brick fireplace wall or a block basement. And a drywall room where one wall is masonry on the exterior side. Each one needs different fixings, a hammer drill and a different amount of time.
The Auxe page for Ottawa says its technicians regularly work in Ottawa condos and apartments, including concrete-wall installations common in high-rise buildings. The Assembly Experts page lists drywall, brick, concrete or stone surfaces among those its technicians mount on. Wall type decides the tools, and the company you speak to needs to know it before it arrives.
Brick: look at the brick and the mortar
A masonry fastener supplier notes that holding values in brick depend on the brick itself and on the quality and quantity of mortar in the joint. Solid brick, hollow block and a brick veneer hold differently. A photo of the wall, plus a note on whether it is a fireplace surround, a full wall or a veneer on a frame, gives the company what it needs.
Drilling brick needs a hammer drill and a carbide bit, which makes the visit longer than a drywall job. The holes are permanent. The position of the mount is marked and checked with you before the first hole.
Concrete: the building comes first
In a condo, the wall may belong to the corporation. A Treadstone Law article explains that Ontario’s Condominium Act requires most declarations to define unit boundaries, and a common wording runs from the top of the floor slab to the underside of the ceiling slab. That makes the concrete a common element, while the drywall and finishes attached to it may be part of your unit. The same article says some renovations need written approval from the corporation even inside the unit.
Condo Information adds that common elements are generally the corporation’s to maintain and repair. Auxe says it coordinates elevator bookings and certificates of insurance with property managers. Ask your manager what they require, then pass it on in the request.
What drives the price
Auxe’s published Ottawa rates go by screen size, as in the table, with masonry inside them. TaskRabbit Ottawa starts at $45 an hour. A masonry wall tends to add time, with the rate unchanged. Cable runs and larger screens add more; see hiding TV cables and the table in TV mounting cost.
Booking around the building
Condo buildings that require an elevator booking or a drilling window set the date. If yours does, give the company the earliest slot you can get.
For other jobs in the same visit, the general page is TV mounting and assembly, and a shelf on the same wall is covered by shelves, curtain rods and art.
Who drills the wall
The desk passes your request to one independent company in Ottawa. It calls, asks about the wall and the building, and prices the job; ask on that call how it fixes to your wall type.
Questions to ask the company
- Have you mounted on this wall type before, and what do you use to fix to it?
- Does the price depend on the wall, or is masonry an add-on?
- Do you carry a certificate of insurance if my building asks for one?
- Which mount does my TV weight need, and do you bring it or do I?
- How do you handle the dust and a hole drilled in the wrong spot?
Have this ready for the call
- The wall type for each spot: poured concrete, concrete block, brick, plaster over masonry or tile
- Screen size, weight from the manual and the mount you bought, if any
- A photo of the wall and the floor plan spot where the TV goes
- Condo: the property manager's drilling hours, elevator booking and insurance rules
- Rental: the landlord's written permission to drill
Questions people ask
My condo bedroom wall is concrete. Who decides if I may drill?
The condo declaration decides. Ontario law requires most declarations to define unit boundaries, and a common wording puts the concrete slab and structure in the common elements. Read the declaration or ask the property manager before booking, and give the company any drilling hours and elevator rules.
Is a brick wall weaker than concrete for a TV?
It depends on the brick and the mortar joints, so the answer comes from the wall itself. Solid brick and hollow block behave differently. Say which you have, and send a photo, so the company comes with a fixing that suits that wall.
Does a concrete wall change the price?
The Ottawa-area installer that publishes rates lists one price by screen size and does not add a line for concrete. TaskRabbit Ottawa says drilling into a facade or cable work may need more time. Ask whether masonry sits inside the quoted price or adds time.
Can a renter mount a TV on a brick wall?
Get the landlord’s permission in writing first. TaskRabbit Ottawa tells customers to check with the landlord or HOA before a Tasker drills. Fixings into brick leave holes that cannot be patched like drywall, so settle who restores the wall when the lease ends.
Can the TV go over a brick fireplace?
It can, if the wall is sturdy enough for the TV and compatible with the mount. TaskRabbit Ottawa advises telling the provider about a mantel so a ladder and the right tools come. Heat from the fireplace is a question for the company that sees the wall.
Will it be loud for the neighbours in an apartment?
Drilling concrete is loud. Condo and rental buildings often set quiet hours. Give the company the allowed times and ask how long the drilling takes, so the visit fits inside them.
