How the list works
You send one request with a list. The company that calls reads the list and prices it. A visit with eight jobs on it costs less per job than eight visits, because the travel, the setup and the minimum charge are paid once.
Write each job on its own line with the room and a photo. Group by type if you like: wall jobs, door jobs, wet-room jobs, assembly. Mark the one or two that matter most.
The jobs on the list
Most small repair lists are made of a few types, each with its own page:
- Walls: patches, cracks and ceiling stains go to drywall repair.
- Mounting: shelves, curtain rods and art and TV mounting.
- Doors: sticking slabs, loose hinges and gapped trim are on door and trim repair.
- Wet rooms: cracked caulk and loose grout are on caulking and grout.
- Drafts: worn seals are on weatherstripping and drafts.
- Assembly: flat-packed beds, wardrobes and shelves go to furniture assembly.
What a handyman covers
HomeStars describes handyman work as small repairs, installations, assembly and maintenance. For gas, wiring and plumbing, the line between handyman and regulated trade matters; handyman or trade explains where it falls.
What moves the price
HomeStars lists the pieces of a handyman price: hourly rate, minimum charges, materials and tools, and travel or call-out fees that grow with distance. Rates run $85–120 an hour for general repairs. Simpler installations such as a fan or a light fixture run $75–200. Assembly runs $95–225. Door installation or window fixes run $250–900. TaskRabbit’s Ottawa page starts at $45 an hour, with a 2-hour minimum in some profiles. The figures are guides. The company that calls sets your price after it sees the list.
Permits and paperwork
Many small repairs need no permit. Paint, new floors and doors or windows replaced in the same size opening are on the City of Ottawa’s permit-free list, and the work still has to meet the Building Code. For a doubt, the City points to 3-1-1.
Ontario’s rules for home renovations apply to the contract. Anything above $50 must be in writing. Put the estimate in the contract and the bill can top it by 10% at most, unless you approve extra work. Keep deposits small: 10% at most, the province says, with the balance once the job is finished.
Moves, sales and seasons
A list gets long at certain moments: a tenant moving out, a house going on the market, the thaw. Those have pages of their own: rental turnover repairs, repairs before selling and spring exterior fixes. The handyman cost guide puts the hourly figures side by side.
The front door and the company
Ottawa Handyman Desk is the front door: it passes your list to one independent local company and sets no price. That company calls, quotes and sends its own technician, so ask it what the visit includes, what the minimum is and when it can come.
Questions to ask the company
- Is there a minimum visit charge, and how many hours does it cover?
- Do you charge for travel to my address?
- Which parts and materials are in the price, and which do I supply?
- Can I see the list priced line by line, and the total?
- Can you show me proof of liability insurance before the visit?
Have this ready for the call
- The list, one line per job, with the room
- A photo of each job and a measurement where size matters
- The year of the house and the wall or surface type
- Parts you already bought, with receipts or model numbers
- Which jobs matter most, in case time runs short
- Access: parking, stairs, elevator booking for a condo, pets
Questions people ask
Which jobs belong on a small repairs list?
Jobs a handyman handles are patches, caulking, door adjustments, shelves, blinds, assembly and light carpentry. HomeStars notes that major electrical or plumbing work needs a trade that requires a licence, and that full renovations need a general contractor. Put doubtful items on the list anyway and let the company sort them.
Is a two-hour minimum normal?
Common enough. Ottawa Tasker profiles on TaskRabbit state a 2-hour minimum, and the HomeStars Ottawa guide counts minimum fees among its price drivers. That is why one longer list costs less per job than three separate visits. Ask the company for its minimum in dollars.
Do I pay for materials on top of the rate?
Often yes. HomeStars counts materials and specialised tools among the costs added to the total. Fasteners or a tube of caulk may sit inside the price; a fixture or a lockset usually comes from you. Ask which items the price covers before the visit.
Should I ask the company for proof of insurance?
HomeStars advises asking for proof of liability insurance before you hire, since it protects you if something is damaged or someone is hurt. It adds that most handymen need no trade licence for basic tasks. Ask the company that calls whether it carries liability cover, and get the answer in writing.
What if the list will not fit in one visit?
Mark the one or two jobs that matter most. The company starts with those and books the rest for a second visit. Ask whether that second trip carries its own minimum or travel charge, and keep both visits on the same written price.
Do weekends cost more?
The HomeStars Gloucester (Ottawa) page says many handymen there offer weekend appointments, with availability that varies and sometimes a slightly higher rate. Say in the request which days suit you and whether weekday mornings are possible, and the company tells you what it charges for each slot.
