What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Do you charge per TV and per piece, or by the hour with a minimum?
  2. Q2If the list runs past the minimum, how do you bill the extra time?
  3. Q3Which anchors will you use on my wall, and are they in the price?
  4. Q4Can you carry the boxes up to the room, or do they need to be there before you arrive?
  5. Q5For the cables: surface cover, in-wall run, or neither, and what does each add?

Before the visit

  • For each TV: screen size, weight from the manual, and the mount model if you bought one
  • The wall for each item: drywall, plaster, brick, concrete, or above a fireplace
  • The height you want the TV centre at, marked with painter's tape
  • For each flat-pack piece: brand, model name and the number of boxes
  • All boxes in the room where the piece will stand, with floor space to lay out parts
  • Building rules on drilling and service elevators, if you live in a condo or rent

Per TV, per piece, or per hour

Ottawa companies price this work three ways, and the same list can come out differently under each.

  • Per item. The HomeStars Gloucester page lists TV, shelf or artwork mounting at $80–250 a job, furniture assembly or disassembly at $50–100 a job, and curtain rails or blinds at $50–120.
  • Per task, by size. The HomeStars Ottawa guide puts assembly tasks at $95–225, depending on the type of piece and how complex it is.
  • Per hour. TaskRabbit gives a starting figure of $45 an hour for mounting in Ottawa. Taskers set their own rates, and one Ottawa Tasker bills each TV at 1 hour minimum however long it takes.

On a list of one TV, a per-item price is easy to compare. On a list of six pieces, ask for the total both ways.

One line per item

TVs. Size, weight, mount, wall, room, height, cables. “55-inch TV, about 15 kg, tilting mount bought, drywall, bedroom, centre at 120 cm, cables in a surface cover.” The weight and the mount’s rating decide the anchors. A full-motion arm puts more leverage on the wall than a fixed mount, so say which one you have.

Flat-pack furniture. Brand, model name, box count, room. “Wardrobe, 3 boxes, model name on the label, second-floor bedroom.” If the instructions call for an anti-tip strap, write “strap to wall” in the line if you want it fixed.

Small mounts. Shelves, mirrors, art, curtain rods and blinds each get a line with the width and the wall type. Heavy mirrors and art need the weight.

Fill the visit

Some companies charge a minimum, and several Ottawa Taskers on TaskRabbit set it at 2 hours. One TV on drywall can leave much of that time unused. Put the other mounting and assembly jobs from the house on the same list: the bookcase still in its box, the blinds for the back bedroom, the coat hooks by the door. Number the lines in order of priority, so the most important ones are done first if the visit runs long.

Outlets, gas fireplaces and building rules

Power. Mounting a TV is handyman work. Moving or adding the outlet behind it is electrical work, and in Ontario anyone you hire for that must be an electrical contractor holding an ESA licence. Almost all electrical work is reported to ESA through a notification of work.

Gas fireplace. A TV on the wall above a fireplace is a mounting job. Anything that touches the gas fireplace itself, such as moving it, servicing it or changing its venting, takes a certificate holder under O. Reg. 212/01. Write “gas fireplace” in the line so the company can check heat clearances against the TV’s manual.

Condos and rentals. Buildings and landlords set their own rules on drilling, noise hours and elevator bookings. Get them before the visit and put the allowed times in the request.

Who does the job

Ottawa Handyman Desk passes your list to one independent local company. That company calls you, prices each item and does the mounting and assembly.

Questions

01Is a TV priced as one job or by the hour?

Both appear in Ottawa. The HomeStars Gloucester page lists TV, shelf or artwork mounting at $80–250 a job. On TaskRabbit, mounting in Ottawa starts at $45 an hour, and one Tasker bills each TV at 1 hour minimum. Ask which way the company counts before you book.

02What should I write about my TV?

Screen size, weight, the mount type (fixed, tilting or full-motion), the wall material, the room and the height you want. Add where the cables should go. With that line, the company can bring the right anchors and quote on the call.

03Can one visit cover the TV, the shelves and the furniture?

Yes, and a list makes better use of a minimum visit. Several Ottawa Taskers set a 2-hour minimum, and a single TV often leaves time over. Add shelves, curtain rods, blinds or a flat-pack piece to the same request.

04My condo walls are concrete. Can I still book?

Write concrete in the line so the company brings a hammer drill and masonry anchors. Condo buildings can set their own drilling hours and noise rules, so check with your property manager and add the allowed times to the request.

05The outlet is in the wrong place for the TV. What now?

Moving or adding an outlet is electrical work. In Ontario, anyone you hire for it must be an electrical contractor holding an ESA licence, and the work is reported to ESA through a notification of work. Put the outlet on its own line, and ask the company who does that part.
