System lines and loose pieces
IKEA furniture arrives in two shapes. Loose pieces, such as a chair, a coffee table or a desk, are a short build each. System lines, such as wardrobe frames with doors and interior fittings, wall-to-wall bookcases and modular storage, are longer jobs where many parts must fit together. The company that calls will ask which kind you have, so name it on the request.
Write the product names exactly as they appear on the receipt or the box label. A name and a quantity tell the company more than a description, because it can look up how many steps a piece has.
What IKEA’s own service charges
IKEA Canada says its assembly service, run with Taskrabbit, starts at $45, with a professional rate based on the items and a final cost calculated at checkout. Taskrabbit’s cost guide of 12 August 2026 says the model is a flat rate per item, with a $45 minimum per booking, and that several small items combine toward that minimum.
The same guide prints sample rates for each product, some of them in the table above. A HAUGA table with four chairs is $60.00; small pieces sit lower, such as $34.80 for a BESTÅ TV bench and $21.60 for a POÄNG armchair. The furniture assembly cost page lists more of them. Taskrabbit puts the average invoice for Ottawa/Gatineau at $138. These numbers are a yardstick. An independent company sets its own price after it sees your list.
What the IKEA service leaves out
Taskrabbit’s guide lists what is outside the standard IKEA assembly: electrical and plumbing work, structural changes to products or walls beyond standard anchoring, large amounts of packaging unless arranged ahead, baseboard removal, and furniture pickup or delivery unless arranged. Ask any company the same questions. A wardrobe against a wall with a baseboard can be a two-part job, and a pickup from the store is a separate line.
Fixing tall pieces to the wall
IKEA’s page says Taskers secure items to the wall at no extra charge. Health Canada wants tip-prone furniture braced or strapped to a stud, or to heavy-duty drywall anchors made for the load, and wardrobes, tall bookcases and chests of drawers come first. The right fastener depends on the wall, which is why the request asks for it. Concrete, old plaster and fresh drywall each need a different fastener.
Ottawa wrinkles
A customer on an Ottawa assembly firm’s IKEA page describes an older house with uneven walls and ceilings that the crew adapted to. Say the age of the house. Check the ceiling height when a wardrobe is taller than a standard frame, because a frame assembled flat may not stand up in the room. Parking matters too: one Ottawa Tasker lists visitor or free street parking as a requirement, and any visitor carrying tools needs a place to stop.
Pieces from IKEA and elsewhere on one list
If the order includes a TV bench and a wall mount, put both on the same request; the TV mounting and assembly page covers the mount. For a bed on its own, see bed and crib assembly. The overview of all piece types is on the furniture assembly page, and what a quote should say is on the furniture assembly cost page.
Who builds the IKEA order
Your product list goes from the desk to one independent local company. It calls, prices the list and sends the builder. Ask for the price in writing, with each piece named, the minimum visit and who takes the packaging.
Questions to ask the company
- Is your price a flat figure for my product list, or hourly with a minimum?
- Does the price cover fixing tall units to the wall, and with what fasteners for my wall?
- If a part is missing from a box, what do you do with the rest of the visit?
- Will you take the packaging, or leave it flattened?
- Can you finish a piece I started and stopped?
Have this ready for the call
- The product names from the receipt or the box labels, one per line, with the quantity
- All boxes opened, counted against the receipt, and placed in the room where each piece will stand
- The wall type behind wardrobes and tall shelves, and the ceiling height of the room
- The floor, the elevator or stairs, and visitor parking
- A note on any piece already started, with the hardware kept together
Questions people ask
IKEA offers assembly at checkout. Why send a request here?
IKEA’s service is run by Taskrabbit and is priced per product. A request here goes to one independent Ottawa company that quotes your whole list, including pieces from other stores, other rooms and a move. Use the IKEA price as a yardstick when the company calls.
Does IKEA assembly include the kitchen?
On IKEA’s own page, kitchen installation is a separate service from furniture assembly. Cabinets, worktops and appliance connections follow different steps, and electrical and plumbing work belong to regulated trades. Say in the request if the kitchen is part of the job.
Can the company finish something I already started?
Yes. One Ottawa firm says it completes IKEA pieces that are partly built. Tell the company what is done and where you stopped, and keep the leftover hardware in one bag. Say which steps of the instructions you reached, since the company has to check finished stages before it builds on them.
What if the boxes arrive with a part missing?
IKEA Canada says missing parts can be ordered online, picked up at a store or sent through customer service. Check the boxes before the visit. If a part is missing on the day, ask the company how it bills the time and whether it can build the other pieces first.
Is a wardrobe system priced by door or by frame?
Taskrabbit’s list shows flat rates by combination, for instance $57.60 for a PAX/GRIMO combination and $115.20 for an AURDAL combination. Doors, interior fittings and the height of the frame change the line. Write the exact combination from the planner printout.
