In short

  • HomeStars prints $60–$120 per hour for an Ottawa handyman, and $85–$120 per hour for repairs such as drywall patching and caulking.
  • TaskRabbit shows handyman work from $45 per hour in Ottawa, and several Taskers on its pages set a two-hour minimum.
  • Minimum charges, travel distance and materials move the final number more than the hourly rate does.
  • Ontario law puts any home renovation contract over $50 in writing, and a quote inside the contract can rise by 10% at most unless you agree to new work.

What the published numbers say

Two public sources give Ottawa handyman rates. HomeStars, a Canadian quote platform, prints $60 to $120 per hour in its Ottawa handyman guide, updated 21.08.2026. For general repairs such as drywall patching, caulking and minor carpentry it narrows the range to $85 to $120. TaskRabbit shows handyman work from $45 per hour in Ottawa and drywall repair from $50.

Read these as a frame. The company that calls you sets the price after it sees your list. A figure on a guide page is a third party’s range, and only the company’s written quote binds anyone.

Hourly or per job

An hourly rate suits open-ended work, where nobody knows how long a stuck door or a leaking trim will take. A flat price per job suits a clear task: one TV, one bed, four shelves. HomeStars suggests asking for a flat-rate quote on larger installations to keep the budget in check.

A list of five or six jobs can go either way. Ask for both numbers. If the hourly estimate and the flat price land close together, the flat price is easier to live with because the day cannot run over.

Minimum visits and travel

The hourly rate is one line of the bill. HomeStars lists minimum charges among the things that move Ottawa pricing, and travel or call-out fees grow with distance from the company. On TaskRabbit several Taskers state a two-hour minimum on handyman, drywall and assembly bookings.

This is why the request asks for a whole list, laid out as on the small repairs list page. Six jobs of 30 minutes fill a visit. One job of 30 minutes pays for the minimum and the drive.

Price ranges by job

The table above collects what HomeStars prints. A few lines need a comment.

  • Assembly. The Ottawa guide gives $95 to $225 for typical assembly tasks. A separate HomeStars page for Gloucester lists $50 to $100. Check which kind of pieces each figure covers. See furniture assembly cost for the detail.
  • Mounting. $80 to $250 covers a TV, shelf or artwork. Wall type and size decide where you land. The TV mounting cost page covers brick and concrete.
  • Repairs. A patch is priced by hour or by hole. The drywall repair cost page splits the two.
  • Doors and windows. $250 to $900 is for installing a door or fixing a window. A hinge tightened or a strike plate moved sits far lower, inside an hourly visit.

What the quote should say

Ontario puts any home renovation contract above $50 on paper, and its checklist for it runs to the work and materials, the total and payment terms, dates, clean-up and any sub-trades. Signing at home for $50 or more starts a 10 calendar-day cooling-off period.

Put the estimate into the contract. The FAQ gives the 10% ceiling that then applies. Avoid cash deals without a receipt, and keep any down payment small.

Jobs for a regulated trade

Paid electrical work in an Ontario home is reserved for a Licensed Electrical Contractor (ESA), and work on gas appliances needs a gas certificate under O. Reg. 212/01. HomeStars sends major plumbing or electrical renovations to a contractor in that trade. A handyman quote for those jobs is a warning sign. The page handyman or trade draws the line with the Ontario sources.

Using these numbers on the call

Ottawa Handyman Desk sends your list to one independent local company, which calls, prices it and does the work. The ranges here come from public guides. Hold the quoted number up against them, and ask how the company got to its own figure.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is the price hourly or for the whole list, and what is the minimum visit?
  2. Does my address carry a travel or call-out fee?
  3. Are materials in the price, or billed at cost on top?
  4. If the list grows on the day, what is the rate for the extra jobs?
  5. Will the written quote be part of the contract, with HST shown?

Have this ready for the call

  • A numbered list of every job, one line each
  • Photos of each job, with a coin or tape in the frame for size
  • Model numbers for anything to be installed or assembled
  • Measurements of doors, windows or walls involved
  • Parking and entry details: condo booking, lockbox, pets

Questions people ask

Why do two Ottawa guides print different hourly rates?

The HomeStars Ottawa guide gives $60–$120 per hour in its introduction and $85–$120 for repairs. TaskRabbit starts at $45 per hour. Platforms, small one-person shops and larger crews carry different overhead, so the spread is wide. Compare quotes that describe the same jobs line by line; a rate alone says little.

Why can one small job cost almost as much as three?

Some companies bill a set number of hours even for a short job, and HomeStars lists minimum charges among the factors in Ottawa pricing. Several Tasker profiles on TaskRabbit state a two-hour minimum. A list of six small jobs often fills the minimum, which is why one list beats six calls.

Does the quote include HST?

HST is added on top of most service prices in Ontario, and a HomeStars Ottawa guide for home inspections quotes its range plus HST. Ask the company whether the figure is before or after tax, and look for the tax line in the written quote.

How much can the final bill rise above the quote?

By 10% at most, if the estimate is part of the contract; that limit comes from Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act, and new work or a new price you agree to sits outside it. So get the quote written into the contract.

When do I pay for a short visit?

For a short handyman visit, payment on completion is common. Ontario’s consumer guidance keeps any down payment to 10% at most and the full amount until the work is done. Ask on the call what the company expects and how it takes payment.
