Where Stittsville sits
Stittsville is the southwest end of the urban west. It lies next to Kanata and Richmond and was part of Goulbourn Township until the 2001 amalgamation. The city ward that matches the urban area counted 40,889 people in 2021.
A company that serves the west end may sit in Kanata, in Barrhaven or further east. Your postal code and the nearest main road tell it on the first call if your street falls inside its usual area. The neighbouring Kanata page covers the housing next door.
The old village and the new subdivisions
Stittsville began as a post village in 1854, named after its first postmaster, Jackson Stitt. The Carleton County fire of 1870 burned almost all of it, and it was rebuilt around the new railway. Passenger service ended in January 1990; the old rail bed beside Abbott Street East now carries the Trans Canada Trail.
- Old Stittsville. Centred on Carp Road and Hazeldean Road. Lists here are about older structures: doors that no longer close square, trim that has been repainted many times, a basement stair rail. See door and trim repair.
- Established subdivisions. Wikipedia names Amberwood Village, Forest Creek and Fringewood among the community’s neighbourhoods. Houses of that vintage call for caulking and refreshed hardware: caulking and grout.
- Newer neighbourhoods. Jackson Trails, Blackstone and Poole Creek are also on the list of neighbourhoods. New homes send TV mounting, shelves, blinds and first-year fixes.
First-year lists in a new build
A new house settles. Drywall cracks near corners, a door rubs, a nail head shows through paint. Anything the Tarion warranty covers goes to the builder first, in writing, as the FAQ sets out. Cosmetic touch-ups the builder declines, and everything you add yourself, are handyman lines. If a patch is needed, the drywall repair page shows how companies price it.
Fences, decks and buried lines
Fence and deck lines come up on many lists. Two City rules cover most of them: fences away from a pool are permit-free, and so are decks under 24 inches high that sit away from the main entrance. Digging is a separate matter, with locates first. HomeStars gives $250 to $900 for outdoor tasks such as fence repair and deck maintenance. An exact figure depends on materials, so the company prices after it sees the yard.
Crescents, driveways and the van
Many newer Stittsville streets are crescents with short driveways and parked cars on both sides. Say in the request where a work van can stop, and whether a garage door code or side gate is needed to reach a fence or deck line. For a project larger than the no-permit list, the FAQ above names the two City counters that answer Stittsville questions.
Who comes to the door
Ottawa Handyman Desk takes the request and hands it to one independent west-end company. The person at your door works for that company, which phones first and sets the price.
Questions to ask the company
- Is my street in Stittsville inside your usual area, and how is the drive billed?
- If the list runs long, which lines would you take first?
- For fence posts or a deck footing, who requests the utility locate and when?
- Do you supply anchors, hinges and filler, or do I buy them?
- If one of my lines belongs on the builder's warranty list, will you tell me on the call?
Have this ready for the call
- Your postal code and the nearest main road: Hazeldean, Stittsville Main Street, Carp or Fernbank
- The possession date, if the house is a new build
- A written list of defects already sent to the builder, if any
- A close photo and a wide photo of each job, sizes written beside them
- Where a van can park on a crescent with a narrow driveway
Questions people ask
Where is Old Stittsville, and does the age of a house there matter?
The 1854 post village at the Carp Road and Hazeldean Road corner, rebuilt after the fire of 1870. Its buildings span many decades, so give the build year. In an older house, Health Canada warns, plaster, drywall and paint can contain asbestos, and that matters before anyone sands.
We took possession of a Stittsville home eight months ago. Who fixes the cracks?
The builder, first. Tarion’s one-year coverage, counted from possession, takes defects in work and materials, and the two-year coverage adds water penetration and faults in electrical, plumbing and heating. Report those in writing and keep the dates; send us what the builder declines.
Do I call before digging fence posts?
Yes. Ontario Dig Authority says locates are free and the law requires them before ground is broken. Cables and pipes run under a permit-free fence line too. Ask the company who books the locate and how long it waits for the marks.
