Two places, one request
Riverside South sits in the south end of Ottawa, just southwest of the airport, and was part of Gloucester until 2001. Manotick lies immediately south of Barrhaven, on the Rideau River, in the rural Rideau-Jock ward. Put your postal code and the nearest main road in the request.
Riverside South: a suburb of new builds
In the early 1990s the area was mostly vacant, with a few houses and farms. The first homes went up in 1996, and by 2021 the community counted 19,802 residents. Building centres on River Road, Earl Armstrong Road and the area west of Limebank Road. The Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge to Barrhaven opened in 2014, and O-Train Line 2 began service to Limebank Road on 6 January 2025.
A new house brings a typical list: beds to assemble, a TV and shelves to mount, curtain rods. The pages on bed and crib assembly, shelves, curtain rods and art and TV mounting cover those lines.
The builder’s warranty comes first
Tarion’s new-home warranty counts from the date of possession. Year one covers defects in work and materials and Building Code violations. Year two covers water penetration through basement or foundation walls and defects in the electrical, plumbing and heating systems. Year seven covers major structural defects. Before a handyman touches a wall, door or fixture on a warranty list, ask the builder how to report it. The page on drywall repair explains patches in newer houses.
Manotick: village streets and rural lots
Moss Kent Dickinson founded the village in 1864 and named it with the Algonquin word for island. Dickinson House dates from 1863 and the stone mill from 1860. Newer streets surround that core, among them a Minto development of about 1,400 homes that an Ontario Municipal Board hearing approved. Beyond the village, lots run larger. In 2021 Manotick counted 5,315 residents.
Village houses from that era may still hold original doors, trim and plaster. Give the build year and ask the company how it works around them, and read door and trim repair for the common lines.
Septic tanks and wells
Most rural Ottawa homes lie outside the City’s water and sewer system and need a private septic system. The City says the homeowner maintains it, and that the Ottawa Septic System Office of the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority co-ordinates approval of any septic system installed, altered or repaired. Private wells are the owner’s too, and a new one is drilled by a well contractor holding a provincial licence. These are trade jobs. A handyman list can mention them so the company knows the house, and the page on handyman or trade shows where the line falls.
Costs at the south end
HomeStars puts general repairs in Ottawa at $85–120 an hour, installs at $75–200 and assembly at $95–225. It lists distance as a cause of travel and call-out fees. Ask the company how it bills the drive, then bundle jobs into one visit. The cost guide has the full table. Outdoor lines wait for spring exterior fixes.
Who answers the request
One independent company that drives the south end and the Rideau corridor receives your list from the desk. It phones you, sets the price and sends the worker.
Questions to ask the company
- Do you cover my address in Riverside South or Manotick, and is there a travel charge for it?
- My home is still under the builder's warranty. Which lines on my list should wait for the builder?
- My lot has a long laneway or gravel parking. Does that change how you plan the visit?
- Which jobs on my list would you pass to a plumber, an electrician or a septic contractor?
- Can you fit all my jobs in one visit, and what is the minimum charge?
Have this ready for the call
- Your postal code, the street and the type of home: new build, older village house or rural lot
- The possession date of a new home, from your purchase documents
- Photos of each job, wide and close, plus sizes for shelves, doors or furniture
- A note on the laneway, the gate and where a vehicle can park
- If the house has a septic tank or a well, say so, and have the contact of the company that services it
Questions people ask
My lot is on a long laneway outside the village. What should I put in the request?
Write the street, the postal code and how a vehicle reaches the house: gravel laneway, gate, narrow bridge, steep slope. The company uses that to plan the drive and to say on the call whether a travel charge applies.
Can a handyman pump or repair my septic tank?
The City of Ottawa puts septic upkeep on the homeowner and recommends a check of the tank for cracks and leaks every three to five years by a contractor holding the right licence. That work sits outside a handyman list. Write the septic line in the request anyway, so the company tells you which trade to call.
How do I find the septic records for my house?
The City says to contact the Ottawa Septic System Office for a system installed in 1978 or later. For systems installed before 1978, contact Ottawa Public Health or call 613-580-6744. Have the record before any job that adds water use, such as a new laundry or bathroom.
Is well water testing free in Ottawa?
The City offers free well water testing, and a free fluoride test as well: call 613-580-6744 ext. 23806 for a bottle and instructions. Mention your well in the request so the company knows which trade to bring for pump or pipe lines.
Honey Gables has older houses than the rest of Riverside South. Does that matter for a job?
Wikipedia dates the three Honey Gables streets west of River Road to about 1950, while the first homes of the rest of Riverside South date from 1996. Health Canada ties asbestos risk in older drywall, plaster and paint to buildings from before 1990, so a house from 1950 is inside that window. Give the build year in the request and photos of the wall or door in question.
