In short
- Minor wall and ceiling patches run $75–150 a job on the HomeStars Gloucester (Ottawa) page.
- Hired electrical work goes to a contractor holding an ESA licence under Ontario law, and the wiring is inspected before the ceiling closes.
- Each pot light hole in an insulated ceiling interrupts the air and vapour barrier above it. The City of Markham's builder tip flags pot lights as a potential source of air leakage.
- In a ceiling that carries a fire-resistance rating, such as between units, the Ontario Building Code limits openings.

Why pot light holes need a repair of their own
A pot light leaves a round cut-out. Swap a can for a slim LED and the new fixture often covers less than the old opening. Move a light and the old hole stays.
A drywall patch for a round hole is a different job from a patch for a square one. The company fits a backing, sets a board plug or a self-adhesive patch, tapes and compounds the edge, sands, and then primes and paints. Each hole takes several coats with drying between.
The electrician goes first
The FAQ quotes ESA on who may do the wiring. ESA also requires an installation to be inspected before it is concealed or buried, so the drywall waits for that inspection. Ask your electrician whether anything still needs a look.
HomeStars lists light fixture installations among handyman jobs at $80–150 on its Gloucester page. The ESA rule still decides who may do the wiring. A handyman patching and painting stays on the drywall side.
The air barrier above the hole
In an insulated ceiling the board is only part of the picture. The City of Markham’s builder tip, updated to the 2024 Ontario Building Code, says pot light penetrations in the attic air and vapour barrier are a potential source of air leakage, and that air leakage into the space above an insulated ceiling can cause serious condensation. It describes a rigid polyethylene surround that is fastened to framing and sealed to the barrier. Markham is another city, and the Code is Ontario-wide, so the same reasoning applies to an Ottawa attic. If you are removing lights, tell the company what is above the ceiling: a roof space, an insulated attic or another unit.
Ceilings between units
Between dwelling units, ceilings can belong to an assembly with a fire-resistance rating, and the FAQ gives the Code limit on openings, taken from Markham’s second builder tip. Adding or moving openings in such a ceiling is a Code matter. For a question about a specific ceiling, the City of Ottawa’s building code counters are at 101 Centrepointe Drive, 110 Laurier Avenue West and 255 Centrum Boulevard, open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30.
What happens on the visit
The company looks at the ceiling from the floor and from a ladder, counts the openings, and checks what sits above. It cuts each hole clean, fits backing, sets the plug or patch, and tapes the edge. Compound goes on in thin coats. After sanding and primer, the paint follows. If a leak above the pots caused the damage, see water-damaged drywall first, and ceiling repair for whole ceilings.
What drives the price
- Number of holes. Each one needs its own coats of compound.
- Finish. Smooth ceilings hide patches more easily than textured ones.
- Paint. Round patches show under glossy paint. Ceiling repainting is a separate line; HomeStars Ottawa lists painting at $400–950 per room.
- Height. A stairwell ceiling needs staging.
The drywall repair cost page gives the full table.
Who closes the holes
Your hole count goes from the desk to one independent local company. It sets the price and the date, calls you, and patches and paints the ceiling.
Questions to ask the company
- Will you patch only the holes I send, or check the whole ceiling for other cut-outs?
- How do you match my ceiling texture around a round patch?
- Is the electrician's inspection finished, and do you need a note before you close the ceiling?
- Does the price cover painting the full ceiling, or only the patched circles?
- My ceiling separates two units. Do you patch it differently?
Have this ready for the call
- A count of holes per ceiling and their diameter, if known
- A photo of the ceiling from the floor and one close-up of a hole
- Whether the house is a detached home, a townhouse or a condo, and which floor
Questions people ask
Do I patch the holes before or after the new pot lights go in?
After the electrician finishes. Plans change as lights go in, and ESA requires that an electrical installation be inspected before it is concealed. A company that patches too early may cut again. Send the request once the electrician has confirmed the final layout and the inspection.
Can a handyman install the replacement pot lights?
The rule decides it. Under Ontario law, ESA says, a homeowner who pays for electrical work must hire a Licensed Electrical Contractor. A handyman can patch and paint the ceiling around the work. Wiring and fixtures belong to the electrical contractor, who arranges the inspection.
Why is a patch in an attic-side ceiling more than a plain patch?
A removed pot light leaves a gap in the air and vapour barrier above it, and warm air leaking into an insulated attic can condense there. The barrier needs sealing before the board goes back, as the section on the air barrier explains. Ask who does that.
Can I put pot lights in a ceiling between two units?
The Ontario Building Code says a membrane in an assembly required to have a fire-resistance rating cannot be pierced by openings unless the assembly was tested for them, with exceptions such as electrical outlet boxes. Ask the electrician and the City building office before adding openings to a unit separation.
How many holes make it worth patching the whole ceiling?
When a ceiling has a grid of cut-outs, round patches rarely blend with the old surface. A skim coat over the whole ceiling gives an even finish, followed by paint. Ask the company to price both ways, hole by hole and as a whole-ceiling job, so you can compare.
