What goes on the list

A desk and a chair take different skills from a wardrobe with sliding doors. The more exact the list, the closer the first price lands to the final one.

Write one line per piece: brand, product name, and the size if it is on the box. A photo of the label on the carton does the same work in a second. Add pieces that need to come apart, such as a bed frame leaving before a move. The price is built on this list.

Types of pieces and what changes between them

  • Seating and small tables. Quick builds, priced at the bottom of the range.
  • Storage. Bookcases, dressers, shoe cabinets and wardrobes. More parts, drawer runners, hinges, and the need to fix tall units to the wall.
  • Desks and office pieces. Standing desks with a motor, desks with cable trays, modular office sets. The motor and the cable parts add steps.
  • Beds. Frames with slats, storage drawers or a headboard. They have their own page: bed and crib assembly.
  • IKEA flat-pack. The system lines, tall wardrobes and kitchen cabinets get their own page: IKEA assembly.

What the price depends on

One Ottawa firm’s blog names four drivers: the type and complexity of the piece, the number of items, the time required, and extras such as carrying pieces to another room, taking away old furniture or removing packaging. The same post prints three tiers: $50 to $100 for chairs, small tables and simple shelves, $100 to $200 for beds, dressers and larger shelving, and $200 or more for wardrobes, modular office furniture and outdoor structures.

The HomeStars Ottawa guide gives $95 to $225 for assembly tasks, and the Gloucester page gives $50 to $100 for assembly or disassembly. The full table, with how to read a quote, is on the furniture assembly cost page.

Minimums and the size of the visit

TaskRabbit’s Ottawa page shows several Taskers who state a 2-hour minimum, and one who does not carry boxes between floors. A short list can still bill a full minimum, and carrying boxes up stairs may sit outside the price. A TV or shelves on the same request fill the visit; the TV mounting and assembly page has sample lines for a mixed list, and shelves, curtain rods and art covers the wall work.

Tall pieces and the wall

Health Canada’s anchoring advice is in the FAQ, and it adds that a dresser can become unstable when several drawers are open. The fasteners depend on the wall. Tell the company whether the wall is drywall, plaster or concrete, and mention children in the home.

Packaging, cleanup and timing in Ottawa

A build produces a pile of cardboard, foam and film, and the FAQ gives Ottawa’s size rule for cardboard at the curb. Agree beforehand whether the company clears the pile or flattens it for your bin. Winter visits bring salt and slush to the door, so set out a mat.

Who builds the pieces

The desk forwards the request to one independent local company, which calls, quotes the list and sends the person who builds; ask for that price in writing, with the minimum, the pieces covered and who handles the packaging.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is the price per piece, per hour, or one figure for my whole list?
  2. What is the minimum visit, and how is time past it billed?
  3. Do you fix tall pieces to the wall, and are the anchors in the price?
  4. Who takes away the boxes, foam and plastic?
  5. If a part is missing or damaged, do you stop, rebook, or build the rest?

Have this ready for the call

  • Every box opened, checked against the parts list, and placed in the room where the piece will stand
  • The brand, product name and number of each piece, or a photo of the label on the box
  • The wall type behind tall pieces (drywall, plaster, concrete) and where the studs run, if you know
  • The floor, the stairs or elevator, and where visitors can park
  • A clear floor area as big as the largest piece lying flat

Questions people ask

How long does it take to put together a wardrobe or a desk?

It depends on the piece, the number of parts and the hardware. A small desk is a short job, a wardrobe with doors and drawers fills much longer. The company that calls can estimate the time from the product name, so write the name or send a photo of the box label.

Do you assemble furniture from stores other than IKEA?

The request form takes any brand. One Ottawa assembly firm lists IKEA, Costco and Structube pieces among the furniture it builds, and the company that calls you says which brands it takes. What matters is that the box holds every part. Put the brand on the list.

Can the company take apart my old furniture for a move?

Yes, disassembly and reassembly is a normal request and is listed next to assembly on the HomeStars Gloucester page at $50 to $100 a job. Say how many pieces, and whether the hardware is still in a bag. Loose screws from different pieces slow the rebuild.

Does a bookcase need to be fastened to the wall?

Health Canada advises anchoring furniture that can tip, using angle braces or safety straps into a stud or heavy-duty drywall anchors made for it. Tall bookcases and dressers top the list. Tell the company the wall type so the right fasteners are on the truck.

What happens to the boxes after the build?

Ask on the call. Some assemblers clear packaging, others leave it flattened. In Ottawa, Circular Materials asks that cardboard be flattened to no larger than 60 by 60 cm for collection. Foam and plastic film go by their own rules, so agree who removes them before the visit.

Can I book a build for a rental unit I do not live in?

Yes. Give the address, the unit access, and a contact who can open the door. The company builds in the room you name. Say who lets the visitor in, whether the unit is occupied, and which day suits the tenant. Photos of the boxes help the quote.
