Four sources, four ways to count
Ottawa has no official price list for drywall repair. What exists are guides, each counting a little differently. The table above puts the main figures side by side: one Ottawa-focused guide that prices by hole size, one Ontario builder’s calculator that prices the first patch higher and the next ones lower, an hourly range from HomeStars, and a platform rate from TaskRabbit.
Patches, cracks, pops and ceilings
Hole size sets the base price in the Ottawa guide: $145–$245 under 4 inches, $245–$385 up to 12, $345–$585 up to 24. A full 4 by 8 sheet replaced runs $245–$485. Cracks are priced by length. A hairline under 3 feet is $85–$145 in that guide, a settled corner crack with mesh tape and three coats is $185–$285, and a crack that returns after every repair is $245–$485 because it needs a joint or backer.
The same guide warns that a crack wider than 1/4 inch, or one that reopens, can point to movement in the house. It lists an engineer’s assessment at $385–$685 before cosmetic work.
Ceilings cost more because the work is overhead. The Ottawa guide adds 25–40%. A stained ceiling is a different job from a plain patch: the builder’s calculator sets a $900 minimum for cutting out and replacing a water-damaged area, about $14 per square foot, and the repair only makes sense once the leak is fixed. For ceiling types see ceiling repair, and for cracks see crack repair.
Why a small job has a minimum
A patch is never one trip. The compound goes on, dries overnight, takes a second coat, dries again, then gets sanded, primed and painted. The Ottawa guide sets a minimum service charge of $185–$285 for one or two small patches plus travel.
That is the reason a list works better than one hole. Ten patches on one visit share the travel and the setup, and the minimum is paid once. The full list belongs in the request; the drywall repair page shows how to sort it.
Texture and paint change the number
Texture matching is a separate line. The Ottawa guide lists orange-peel at $145–$245 per room, knockdown at $185–$345 and stipple at $245–$485. Matching a popcorn ceiling is $185–$345 per location, and the guide says most pros prefer to remove the whole texture, at $1.50–$3.50 per square foot. See popcorn ceiling repair.
Paint is the largest swing. The calculator adds $250 per room for blending paint over the patch area and $650 per room for repainting a wall or ceiling corner to corner, and it notes that a patch painted only over the patch will show.
Older houses and asbestos
Health Canada’s advice on testing is in the FAQ. The figures above leave out test costs and special handling, so for a house from before 1990, ask the company how it deals with both.
What a written quote should show
- Number and size of patches, each on its own line.
- Finish level and what is primed or painted.
- Minimum charge and tax treatment.
- What happens if hidden damage turns up.
- Number of visits and drying days.
The price that counts
Ottawa Handyman Desk passes your list to one independent local company, and that company sets the price from your photos. The figures here are context for the call; ask for its number in writing before work starts.
Questions to ask the company
- Is your price per patch, per hour or for the whole list, and what is the minimum charge?
- Which finish level does the quote assume, and does it include primer and paint?
- Is paint only on the patch, or corner to corner on the wall or ceiling?
- How many visits will it take, counting the drying time between coats?
Have this ready for the call
- A numbered list of every patch with a photo and a size in inches
- Which patches are on a ceiling, and which room is below a bathroom or roof
- Whether any damage came from water, and whether the leak is already fixed
- The year the house was built, and whether the ceilings are textured
- The paint brand, colour name and sheen from the can, if you have it
Questions people ask
Why does one Ottawa source say $145 for a small patch and another $300?
The two sources count different things. The Ottawa guide quotes $145–$245 for a hole under 4 inches and sets a $185–$285 minimum service charge. The Ontario builder’s calculator prices $300 for the first patch finished and primed, because the job takes three visits. Compare quotes on what they include.
What is a finish level on a drywall quote?
Trades grade drywall finish from level 1 to 5. The Ottawa guide calls level 4, sanded smooth for eggshell or satin paint, the residential standard and adds $0.50–$1.25 per square foot over level 3. Level 5, a full skim coat, adds $1.50–$3.50. Ask which level the price assumes.
How much extra is a ceiling compared with a wall?
The Ottawa guide puts ceilings 25–40% above the same repair on a wall: a small ceiling patch at $185–$345 and a large one at $385–$685. The builder’s calculator starts a ceiling patch at $600 for the first. Overhead work is slower and light across the ceiling shows every flaw.
Do nail pops and small cracks cost less?
They are priced in batches. The Ottawa guide lists $25–$45 per nail pop with a minimum batch of 10, and $85–$145 for a hairline crack under 3 feet. The builder’s calculator charges $150 for the first ten screw pops. Winter heating dries the framing, so pops often show up together.
Should I get a test before a company sands an old ceiling?
Yes, in a house built before 1990. Health Canada counts plaster, drywall and spackling as possible asbestos carriers and wants a professional test before renovation. A lab test of a sample is the only way to know. Put the build year in the request so the company can raise it on the call.
